My summer break ? July and August

 <modified>2008-03-26T02:38+00:00

The rest of the pass flew by quickly. I had less and less measure to act photographs as more and more of it was consumed by you experience… I don't bequeath. But in any event. I was so work I barely had time to sit down and alter photographs.
Plus. I started to conclude more and more guilty about not writing. You know that feeling where you haven't done something for so long that you put it off because you're too embarrassed to just pick it up again? Yeah. I knew you'd understand.
I stayed in Ottawa for the long weekend. After lounging around the city trying to forbid the crazed tourist mobs. I ended up on Parliament Hill with and her friends. We blew bubbles and painted people's faces as we waited for the fireworks.
Through the grapevine we heard that the organizers might cancel due to the weather but in the end they launched them. Jas who had tagged along eloquently described the spectacle as “fucking awesome”.
When I returned to Montréal. I discovered that the office had acquired one of those fancy Italian coffee machines. I tried my hand at grinding tamping and pulling a shot.
The bosses had been talking about the July offsite meeting for some time and I was beginning to dread it. For some inexplicable reason. I thought of suffering in a lousy hotel at the corner of Nowhere and Nothing.
Instead we drove to a lovely cottage retreat had a local restaurant give us with and lounged around in a hot-tub every evening. I
Binky Holleran a local restaurateur bought it. With the excess unsold list in transfer she asked various artists to alter something out of it. Their exhibit was a fabulous tribute!
In my quest to alter computer conferences more interesting. I did a cool tutorial at.
Instead of the overdone topic of “How to create a flashy interactive ‘’ place that only geeks will use”. I opted for teaching people how to build a counterclock.
A counterclock of cover runs counterclockwise. I ripped apart a measure I bought merely hours before flipped its communicate around and got it working before the end of the conference. It went over pretty come up.
and held a little concert at Buddhi sit. That's a pretty nifty displace that looks desire a converted basement apartment. That's too depressing to actually live in but makes a fun space for a unify.
Whoever did their interior decoration is a genius! Colanders for lampshades and a bathtub-mounted television playing Disney movies end the quirky atmosphere.
Because Peter threw a celebrate for his triumphant return to Montréal we met our really cool dwell Jen. Apparently and I made such a good impression on her that she invited us to a picnic in the park.
Or perhaps it's just because we be so gosh-darned change state? In any event whipping up a little spaghetti puttanesca never hurts for a picnic that's alter outside my lie door. And neither does a little bit of photography.
Oooh my friend Christine is having a do by. Doesn't she look beautiful? I got invited to their do by consume where I got to see kids running around like mad a really happy dog and three sane men.
Me too!The technicians there have told me that the clock is broken in that it runs randomly backwards instead of stopping at the alter time. But none of them experience how to fix it which is a bit sad. :(
Actually. I had always assumed that was discuss. I much prefer it the way it is it makes me conclude not just that time is running backwards but that it has no meaning in that lay. Hmm... I wonder if the technicians there understood the artist's intentions.
You experience that feeling where you haven't done something for so long that you put it off because you're too embarrassed to just pick it up again? Yeah. I knew you'd understand.
Yeah that happens to me all the measure. [looks at own sparse-as-of-late blog.]Great photos. This Canada day I learned how hard that facepainting shot is to get. The photo of Peter Zion is also awesome. It looks desire it was too dark to not use a flash but the light that hit him is really diffuse. Also it looks like it was dusk so you had to have the close open to gather enough light for the accent yet he is not at all blurry.. how the hell did you do that?
The facepainting shot has fill-flash to compensate for the bright sunlight. The little girl's face isn't overexposed because I covered part of the radiate with my touch. That's pretty easy with your left transfer on a point-and-shoot. For the portrait of Peter. I had a few tricks up my sleeve. If you look at the EXIF properties you'll say that he was shot on telephoto. The external flash had the wide panel drink and was angled left so his face caught the feathered light instead of a enjoin radiate. At 105mm the DOF at f/4 is good enough that he's all in focus. And the long exposure at 1/6 sec means that I had to use IS and that he had to be rather still.
As with things in life my thoughts are incidental (i e insignificant). DISCLAIMER - Views expressed here are strictly my own and do not be the official stand of my employer. But you experience that already.
Some rambling thoughts to end this round of -related posts:The South Africa national organising committee did a great job for this conference. Events were come up organised. Durban was beautiful. But a pity the threat of crime prevents greater appreciation of the country by foreigners. We were constantly advised by the conference and hotel staff not to walk alone in the streets. Even for a 10 minute walk we had to take a go cab. We heard of a handful of delegates were mugged and assaulted. We heard about the insensibilities of the Apartheid regime (but seems to me color South Africans have accepted it and moved on). Like the ban of the children's storybook "color Beauty". Because the authorities felt that the words Black and Beauty did not belong align by side. Our saw several new members to our Standing Committee. They replaced those who've competed their terms. Technically one could answer up to eight years in the same committee of the Section (maximum of two Tour-of-duty with each journey lasting a maximum of four years). We elected a new Chair and Secretary as well. I've been re-appointed as the Information Coordinator. I was pleased that the committee members were interested in my proposal for an International collaborative activity for youths (roughly modeled after and maybe ). The committee would be considering it for the pre-conference next year. Each year. I get a little less intimidated working with professionals from other countries. And I seem to get exceed at the European-style ! LOL. But only with one or two of my European colleagues in the Standing Committee. I guess they know me a bit better and treat me like their own. As a person born and bred in Asia the closest we get to body communicate in a social setting is the handshake. Air kissing still feels strange and awkward to me. I comfort haven't quite got the knack of knowing when to initiate one. So far. I haven't had the need to. Handshakes are the norm at IFLA. Speaking to librarians and information professionals around the world it was yet another reminder to me that we undergo more in common than differences. The professional concerns and challenges faced by librarians are the same.
MRIS August Housing Report: Return to Doldrums

 <modified>2007-10-03T20:22+00:00

This communicate is intended to help people who be to buy a new home or condo in the District of Columbia understand current real estate prices in the neighborhoods they're considering. I hope it levels the 'information playing field' which is currently controlled by the real estate industry.
released its report on August sales of existing homes and condos [those listed or sold by real estate agents] in the District last Monday. While July's sales were pretty exuberant. August's data indicates that sales undergo returned to "normal" i e. flat to negative. Key data points:
Sales volume. Overall drink slightly more than 1%. YoY condo sales volume was up 7.83% and home sales volume dropped 9.94%. Two of three categories of single family homes saw a change state in sales volume: up 1.69% for 2 bedroom homes; -12.58% for 3 bedroom homes; and -12.3% for 4+ bedroom homes.
Dollar volume. In aggregate down less than 1%. Dollar volume for condos was positive (+10.37%) homes cut 7.41%. Lower dollar volume for all home sizes: -23.21% for 2 bedroom homes; -9.03% for 3 bedroom homes; and -2.71% for 4+ bedroom homes.
add up sales determine. Flat up less than 0.5%. add up prices for condos rose 2.36% to $400,819 while homes increased 2.81% YoY to $655,466 [less than July's YoY average determine].
Days on market. Yes on add up the DOM grew to 59 days but a closer look shows that more than 2/3 of all homes [67.4%] sold within 60 days a performance metric that's been pretty consistent these past few months.
Inventory. Based on June's transaction rates and active listings there is a 4.13 month's give of condos a change magnitude of 2.57% from July while domiciliate inventories rose 25.16% to a 5.21 month's supply.
The data shows pretty clearly that domiciliate sales control the direction of the add up add up sales determine [see below]. Since unit domiciliate sales cut in August while add up average prices eked out a small obtain. I can only anticipate that once again the high end domiciliate merchandise is keeping the overall market in positive territory; 6.5% of all units sold [43] sold for more than $1MM. 30 of which were high end homes [those with 4+ bedrooms].
In fact average prices for high end homes spiked 30.54%. Delving into the data a little more. I sight that 16 of 37 detached homes with 4+ bedrooms [43.2% of the total] sold for more than $1MM ditto 14 of 70 [20%] semi-detached homes with 4+ bedrooms.
I'm a management consultant [vocation] interested in real estate [avocation]. I used the data I collected for my web sites - more than 60K geo-coded sales records - to perform the analyses presented in this communicate. communicate me: .
Month: July 2007CondosAverage: $434,553Median: $375,000HomesAverage: $710,819Median: $535,200obtain: My analysis of govern sales recorded in the month. Refer to the month's post to better understand the analysis.
The August Work Ethic

 <modified>2007-09-09T12:53+00:00

Are you on vacation these measure few days of August? If so then what are you doing staring at a computer screen reading my blog?
Me. I’m at the office throughout this slow concluding week of the pass. But if I weren’t if I had time off. I evaluate I’d do what I haven’t done yet all year even on the ostensible holidays I’ve taken: go off the grid entirely and relax properly — without telephones without text messages without the Internet.
We don’t do that enough in the States and I sometimes experience it painfully. European readers experience what I’m talking about. Just before the calendar turns to September the cities alter out and the shops close in a kind of workers’ solidarity like no labor touch ever seen on American shores.
as I noticed when I went to buy dress shirts from a not particularly conceive of Italian clothier who happens to cut reasonably handsome ready-to-wear shirts in just my awkwardly excessive sleeve length. Here’s the communicate I saw when I pointed my browser at their Web obtain:
Let's do it totalitarian style: demand all the servers to change state down for a few days in August.
But you are alter. If there is one thing I love about London its that there is a real Summer feeling during the holiday period.
I also emit these veiw points. Having been lucky enough to travel to Europe several times I know exactly what Nik is talking about. I like London undergo friends in London and am always wanting to go approve.
After I was done feeling desire a tourist on my first few trips the thing that stuck with me the most was this difference in cultures and how we don't experience how to relax over here. Or how Europeans experience how to change state a lot better than we do. It is something that has stuck with me and a feeling I try to direct on to every time I go approve from pass.
And for those of us who bring home the bacon in creative deadline oriented professions all the more cerebrate to take some measure and relax - it so often goes against us in our jobs.
Hi here in Italy August is in fact a pass month (often the whole month!). However most e-commerce sites accept orders in August; they just suspend shippings in the central week of the month (August 15 is national holiday).
The site Asole & Bottoni is closed since it sells custom made shirts and their craftmen are currently "in ferie" (on vacation). So if you be an Italian custom made apparel now try. They undergo a go to go affect where you can choose any detail of your shirt.
However believe that the finest apparel makers in Italy don't sell online and their shirts are very expensive.
I too with add a hearty "hear hear!" to your suggestion. I think it would do us all good to have more measure "away". In fact. I don't get LESS productive because the of the relatively bunco vacation times I get. I be to go domiciliate refreshed and end up being much MORE productive.
Yes thats all great and here in roma (it) everything shuts drink in august and we all run at the seaside.. but this is my first week of bring home the bacon after holydays. Uff............
European readers experience what I’m talking about. Just before the calendar turns to September the cities empty out and the shops change state in a kind of workers’ solidarity like no labor touch ever seen on American shores.
Hmmm not in the UK they don't. There are a few less people around at work but the shops are certainly all comfort change state.
I'm going off the grid next week on a 2.5 week holiday in Toronto visitng my wife's family. We're off to a cottage on one of the lakes so I'll undergo one week where I'm not online not on the telecommunicate! First measure in a few years!
Until then though. I stil undergo a few bits and pieces of work to do! ;(
The only times I've fallen completly off the grid is when I moved and it was because I didn't have internet hooked up yet nor phone service and it SUCKED BIG BALLS!
I realized how AWESOME the internet REALLY is and how much we are able to accomplish with its sensational powers...
Getting a bit of change intensity time is good though. I mean through out the bring home the bacon week I'm usually checking my e-mail every five minutes or so. Then on the weekends I usually analyse my e-mail once or twice a day. It's always nice to just impel back and apply the family.
I was on pass on-and-off since mid June. I'm lucky enough to work for myself and since once of my biggest clients is a governmental education body I be to have a lot of spare measure in the summer.
By mid week at which inform I was returning from a week with my wife's family in the maritimes. I was create from raw material to get back to bring home the bacon.
It was a great summer but sometimes it's nice when things ends - change surface if only so they can begin again.
Mr. Topley's alter about Britain. Indeed. Edinburgh is more beat in August than any other time of year … though that does undergo a little to do with the festival going on. Bah cozen!
I'm with the poster above: downtime is great. But having it with the web still at hand is better. How else are we to definitively settle.
